Discussing Darwin: His 'sacred cause'
Speakers: James Moore, Adrian Desmond
Why did Charles Darwin, a rich young man from a respectable family, go out of his way to develop the image of humans descended from apes when he knew it would outrage society? Why did he keep quiet about it for 30 years before publishing The Descent of Man in 1871? Could the greatest moral movement of his age, for the abolition of slavery, have helped inspire his common descent theory of human origins? Join us for a drink as we discuss the controversial thesis that there was a moral impetus behind Darwin's theory of evolution – a brotherhood belief that not just different races but all species are members of one family, with a shared ancient ancestor.

Discussing Darwin: Can science ignore faith?
Speakers: Reverend Professor Michael Reiss, Dr Christopher Lyal, Reverend Malcolm Brown
Religion and science are both valued cultural endeavours that are called upon when looking for answers, inspiration and guidance. They have often been seen as being in conflict with one another but despite this they are both strong elements in society. Join us for a drink and a lively debate as we attempt to explore the relationship between science and Christianity and discuss if there is a middle ground that could allow both sides to reconcile their differences.
