Fancy That: Darwin’s Pigeons

It was 150 years ago that papers on natural selection by Darwin and Wallace were read at a Linnean Society meeting in London and the world changed. Ornithology played a crucial role in the work of both men – Wallace explored a far-flung archipelago while Darwin kept pigeons at home. Find out about the birds that inspired Darwin and how his high-flying ideas had some very humble foundations.

Alfred Russel Wallace: Hertfordshire’s most famous naturalist

Find out more about the fascinating life of Alfred Russel Wallace, co-discoverer of the theory of natural selection with Charles Darwin. Educated in Hertford, Wallace was also the father of zoo-geography and a skillful writer on many subjects.
