Planning a school visit

The Museum has a lot to offer visitors on school trips. To help you plan your day, take a look at some of the  things you should consider below.

Booking your visit

All bookings should be made at least two weeks in advance.

To book, discuss your needs or to arrange a pre-visit, please contact the Learning team. Please make sure you have all the information we'll need, using the checklist supplied at the bottom of this page.

Supervision

Visiting school groups should have a minimum ratio of one adult to every 10 children.

Parking

If you are arriving by coach, please ask the driver to drop you next to the Museum entrance before parking in the nearby Hastoe Lane layby. Minibuses may park in the Museum's free car park.

Eating

The Museum has two outdoor picnic areas, one of which is by the wildlife meadow. There is a small indoor picnic area for one class at a time, which must be booked in advance. Schools can also pre-order lunch boxes from the Zebra Café, which sells a range of drinks and pre-packed snacks.

Health and safety

A list of recommendations will be provided with your booking confirmation. If you require a pre-visit, please contact the Learning team. Please note that wheelchair access is currently limited to the ground floor. All workshops take place on the ground floor.

Telephone booking information requirements

Please have the following information ready when booking by phone.

Contact details including:

  • group leader name
  • email address (if available)
  • telephone number
  • school name and address

Visit details including:

  • date of visit
  • approximate time of arrival
  • approximate time of departure
  • number of adults and number of pupils
  • age range of pupils

Optional requirements:

  • whether you would like to use the shop
  • whether you would like to use Museum clipboards
  • preferred time for use of the indoor picnic room
    (The room is available from 11.30 and the last booking slot is at 14.00. Standard bookings are for 30 minutes. These can be extended depending on availability.)
  • name and quantity of activity sheets
  • name and preferred time of workshops
    (Sessions are available on the hour every hour from 10.00 to 15.00. Please limit bookings to one session per hour. Each session caters for a maximum of 32 pupils.)
