Astronomy workshop

This activity is free and has curriculum links appropriate for KS3 and KS4 students.

Give your students the chance to see and touch volcanic rocks and four-billion-year-old meteorites while considering the origin of our solar system and the unique properties of planet Earth.

Students will consider whether studying the organisms in the deepest, darkest depths of our oceans can reveal what we can expect to find elsewhere in the solar system.

The workshop is divided into three distinct sections:

  • the origin of our universe and the relevance of tectonics to life: a presentation and a chance to handle specimens
  • designing an organism adapted for life on Titan, Mars or Europa
  • space mission debate to consider the ethical, financial and technical implications of space travel in the search for life
